Quick answer: Portfolio overlap is the share of holdings two funds have in common. To check it, compare the funds’ latest monthly portfolios (from the AMC factsheet) or use an online overlap tool. Above 50% overlap between two equity funds usually means one is redundant. You’re paying two expense ratios for nearly the same portfolio. Large cap, large & mid cap and flexi cap funds often overlap heavily because they all own HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance, Infosys and similar heavyweights.
Here’s a pattern we see in portfolio reviews all the time. Someone has seven SIPs: two large cap, two flexi cap, one focused, one ELSS and one “bluechip” fund. They think they’re diversified. But their top 10 holdings are the same 10 banks and IT companies, seven times over.
What is mutual fund overlap?
| Stock | Fund A Weight | Fund B Weight | Overlap (Smaller Weight) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank | 9% | 8% | 8% |
| ICICI Bank | 7% | 7% | 7% |
| Reliance | 6% | 4% | 4% |
| Infosys | 5% | 6% | 5% |
| Other Common Stocks | — | — | 24% (Illustrative) |
| Total Portfolio Overlap | 48% | ||
How to check overlap: step by step
- List your equity funds from your CAS (check all your funds with your PAN).
- Get each fund’s latest portfolio. AMCs publish full monthly portfolios on their websites.
- Compare pairs using a free online overlap tool, or a spreadsheet using the “smaller weight” method above.
- Look at the top 10–15 holdings first. That’s where most overlap hides.
- Flag pairs above 50%. These are the merger candidates.
What goes wrong: comparing funds by category name. Two “flexi cap” funds can overlap 25% or 65%. Only the portfolio tells you.
How much overlap is too much?
Overlap between two funds | What it means |
|---|---|
Under 30% | Genuinely different. Fine to hold both. |
30–50% | Some duplication. Okay if the funds play different roles. |
Over 50% | Largely the same portfolio. Consider keeping one. |
Over 70% | Near-identical. Almost certainly redundant. |
SEBI has also started tackling this from the fund-house side. Under the 2026 categorisation rules, sectoral and thematic funds can overlap no more than 50% with the same AMC’s other equity schemes. More on that in our SEBI 2026 rules explainer.
Which fund categories overlap the most?
- Large cap vs large cap: usually very high, since there are only 100 large caps to pick from.
- Large cap vs flexi cap: often high, because most flexi caps keep 60–70% in large caps.
- Large cap vs Nifty 50 index: high by design.
- Flexi cap vs mid cap or small cap: usually low to moderate.
- Equity vs hybrid: the equity portion of a hybrid fund often mirrors your large-cap fund.
How many funds do you actually need?
For most people, 3–5 equity funds cover everything:
- A core (index or flexi cap)
- A mid cap or small cap satellite, for long goals
- Optionally an international fund or ELSS
- Hybrid or debt funds for shorter goals

How to consolidate without a big tax bill
Found overlapping funds? Don’t sell everything at once.
- Stop new SIPs in the fund you’re dropping and redirect that money to the one you’re keeping. No tax.
- Check exit loads. Many equity funds charge 1% within 12 months, so wait until units cross that period.
- Sell long-term units first, up to ₹1.25 lakh of gains a year. That part is tax-free. Spread the rest over 2–3 financial years.
- Avoid redeeming units under 12 months old, which are taxed at 20%.
If you’ve ended up with a pile of SIPs by accident, I Accidentally Started Too Many SIPs walks through it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is portfolio overlap in mutual funds?
The percentage of holdings two funds share, calculated by adding the smaller weight of each common stock.
Is 40% overlap in mutual funds bad?
Not necessarily. Under 50% is usually acceptable if each fund has a distinct role. Above 50%, one fund is often redundant.
How do I check mutual fund overlap for free?
Compare the funds’ monthly portfolios from the AMC websites, or use a free online overlap tool. RingMoney advisors can also run the check for you.
Do index funds overlap with large cap funds?
Yes, usually heavily, since both hold the biggest Indian companies.
Will consolidating funds trigger tax?
Selling does. Stopping SIPs doesn’t. Use the ₹1.25 lakh yearly LTCG exemption and spread sales across financial years to keep tax low.
